DETROIT—On Wednesday, Aug. 24, the MotorCities National Heritage Area spent a special evening with over 130 supporters at its inaugural Motor Boats & Motor Cars event.
The evening started with heavy hors d'oeuvre, drinks and fun at the Rattlesnake Club in Detroit. Guests were treated to classic car rides provided by local owners. Antique autos included a 1932 Ford Coupe, 1956 Oldsmobile Super 88, 1964 Plymouth Valiant and a 1947 Oldsmobile. Two antique boats were also display – a 1961 Thompson Seacoaster Special and a 1952 Speedliner.
After eating up with good friends at the Rattlesnake Club, guests boarded the Diamond Belle ferry boat, from Diamond Jack’s River Tours, for an historic, narrated tour exploring past and present automotive industries connected to the Detroit River.
The event was attended by automotive and history enthusiasts from around the region and several dignitaries including Sen. Steve Bieda (D-Warren), Detroit City Councilman George Cushingberry, Sandra Clarke, director of the Michigan Historic Center, and Barbara McCallahan representing U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow.
This unique event raised funds to support the mission of the MotorCities National Heritage Area, a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to the historic preservation of the automotive industry. The MotorCities is an affiliate of the National Park Service, which celebrated its 100th anniversary the following day.
