The "Wide Track" had been the most familiar identities among automobiles, describing the Pontiac line of cars with distinctive broad, low, bold designs. In the late 1950s, Pontiac Motor Division chief Semon "Bunkie" Knudsen wanted to improve sales and so he urged the engineers to add five inches to the track of all models. The addition of the five inches created a new look and improved handling which made it an immediate success.
